Seeing as I’m the Queen of All TV, my suggestions on what you should be watching or catching up on is pretty much gospel.
DOWNTON ABBEY

Downton Abbey, Season 1 – Masterpiece
Downton Abbey, Season 2 – Masterpiece
Good thing for all of us that there are only 2 seasons of Downton Abbey for you to catch up on and within those seasons are just 7 episodes. Set aside a weekend, lock the kids outside, and watch yourself into English royalty bliss.
Plus, you’ll totally get why these Downton Abbey paper dolls from Vulture I shared on We Know Awesome are so HIGHlarious.

BREAKING BAD

It’s shameful how I didn’t start watching Breaking Bad until just a few months ago. Lucky for me though that I had the chance to catch up all at once in a 2 week marathon of WATCH ALL THE BREAKING BADS.
And maybe you’ll understand why I have a woody for Jesse Pinkman. And LOOK! I can make out with him in his paper doll form! Don’t worry; I’ll laminate him first.

SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL

image via Showtime
It’s probably the best British import show you’ve never heard of. Secret Diary of a Call Girl has been on Showtime for the last few years, tucked in to a few other popular shows. In a quick synopsis, picture Belle, a London call girl entertaining men in her fashionable flat, who as Hannah, happens to be in love with her best friend. I know. It’s so good. Watch it.
WHAT NOT TO WATCH
I’m going to admit that I’m a joiner, wanting to be a cool kid and get all of the Doctor Who references I read. I tried watching the first episode. Friends, when I say it was the weirdest show I’ve ever seen, and not in a good way, I’m not exaggerating.

In my confusion with the mannequins and the alien Doctor and why Hannah/Belle from Secret Diary of a Call Girl was wearing high-waisted mom jeans, I couldn’t get past the first 30 minutes. How I got past the first 10 minutes is a testament to my passion for TV.

Ha! I don’t really get Dr. Who, either, and it’s been on around me my entire life. Should we form a secret club?
I love Breaking Bad, want to see Downton Abbey badly but can never convince husband to turn the TV to PBS, and I started watching Secret Diary and then he turned our Showtime off. Ass. Now I shall make him download everything as penance.
PENANCE! How dare he turn off premium channels! FOR SHAME.
You must MUST watch Downton Abbey whether or not he wants to see it. The first season is on Netflix streaming and both seasons are on PBS.org, too. I watched them ALL in about 3 days. Not kidding.
Hahahahaha………..I’ll follow your advice and take a look at these shows.
I might take a sneak peak at Dr. Who as well.
Thanks for sharing.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you about Doctor Who.
I knew I needed Showtime. I’ve never even tried to watch Dr.Who, even though all the other people on the Game of Thrones message board said that they were going to watch it until GoT came back. Every time I read the premise my mind wanders.

OH MY CRAP I can’t believe I forgot Game of Thrones.
And if people who love GoT like Doctor Who, they have some serious issues with multiple personalities.
I love Breaking Bad and Jesse Pinkman. One of the best shows out there if you ask me. Since you were always talking about Downton Abbey, I pulled it up on Netflix and was immediately hooked. I finished the 1st season in 2 days and then surfed over to PBS to watch season 2 in 2 days. Its an incredible show. And I normally don’t like period dramas.
I have never watched Dr. Who. I have heard so much about it, and its in my Netflix queue, but I am afraid the reality of the show won’t live up to the hype.
YOU are a smart lady! I can’t help but say things in my head in a very distinguished English accent. Also, I say “DAAAISEH” over and over while I bake cakes.
I totally agree with your must watch list but I gotta say… you didn’t give “Doctor Who” a good chance.
I too thought it was really weird after watching the first episode. I wondered why on earth everyone loves it so much. I saved this one for during naptime in the afternoon. And I was often multitasking while it was on, halfway paying attention. And by the time the season was over, I was hooked without knowing exactly when it happened. After that initial season, it got better. And better.
Doctor Who is an acquired taste. Maybe try giving it another chance and keep your expectations low at least for that first season.
I sooooooo cannot wait for Breaking Bad to come back on!!

Oof. The first show was just SO bad though. I even removed it from my Netflix Instant Queue right away, and I NEVER do that. I’m kind of an Instant Queue hoarder.
I don’t even think I ever added mine to my Queue! LOL! I just got at it from the “recently watched” part. I agree. The first show is B.A.D. But how many good shows out there had cruddy pilots. They have no budget, people don’t have their groove yet… ugh. The second show is much better and if I hadn’t watched it right after I watched the first, I might have dumped the whole series too.
Give it a shot! For me!

Downton Abbey is fabulous!! I can’t wait for season 3. I know what you mean about Dr. Who. My husband and I watched the first one and hated it. A friend of his said they get much better and that we should stick it out, but we just couldn’t. It was terrible.

And BTW, I love the Mary paper doll and the faces with her two expressions–stone face or smirking. She’s great.
