Amending Summer Vacation’s Grand Plans

If I were to count the days, I’m hoping we’d be near or around the 1/2-way point of school summer vacation.

But because I have work to do, blogs to write, Facebook statuses to update, and small children hovering around me, I’m not counting the days. Also, I don’t want to do the calculations and find out we haven’t yet hit the middle of summer vacation because I’d likely fall into a coma.

Prior to my girls’ summer vacation actually beginning, I had Grand Plans! of what we were going to do. We made a list of Grand Plans! things to do, places to go, people to see, projects to accomplish, all while I was going to continue doing the “work” I did when they were in school.

Until this point in the middle of July, we’ve crossed off exactly one thing from our Grand Plans! list: Visit Aunt Jackie’s new pool (see photo).

I’m amending the Grand Plans! to include some of the following activities and their successes:

ACTIVITY SUCCESS
Prevent the Summer Slide with daily workbook activities Completed a total number of 8 pages between them.
Limit TV watching Able to watch and pay attention to a solid 5 hours of random Disney Channel shows.
Learn how to ride a 2-wheel bike Completed the final level of Marvel SuperHeroes on the PS3.
Participate in the online, at-home math and reading school competition Conned me into paying for 2 Deluxe Webkinz memberships.
Practice proper swimming strokes Able to stay in a pool without getting out to pee for 3 straight hours.

What we have done is a whole lot of nothing where “nothing” equals “marathon Disney Channel watching” and “schedule Webkinz parties” and “play Wii jousting and say it’s exercise.”

School starts on August 20th. Someone tell me that’s tomorrow.

Wait.

I guess I’m confused on one point in this wonderful blog post.

People get out of the pool to pee? Casey confused.

I *think* you had some major wishful thinking going on there. That bit about having your kids at home all day and continuing to do the same “work” you do when they’re in school? Insanity! Only full-time childcare or summer camp solves that problem, my friend.

Unfortunately, my “work” doesn’t make us enough to afford full-time childcare or summer camp, so they’re making up their own activities to keep themselves occupied. These activities include making paperclip necklaces, movie-watching, and begging me to play Go Fish.

Totally sounds like our summer vacation. The Grand Plan went out the window. But I have to give my man props – he does a craft with the girls every day. Unfortunately, they don’t always work out as planned. 2 weeks ago they had “science” class and there was olive oil from one end of the house to the other. Yesterday it was making apple stamps with food coloring instead of paint (because we don’t own that). Yup, another total disaster. I didn’t know an apple stamp could splash color that far.

Uhm. CRAFTS? Every DAY? Crafts are not allowed in this house.
