Edna

in Family

This could be a sad, weepy story about my grandmother and the life she lived and the 3 children she bore and the 7 grandchildren she nurtured and the 10 great-grand children she loved.

But I’m not the sad-weepy-story kind of granddaughter to a woman who died today.

We knew it was coming. She knew it was coming. It is not sad that she is gone. I am not sad. I am relieved for her.

Instead of telling you all of the things she did in her life, I’ll give you a run-down of the ways her nuttiness has somehow trickled down the family tree into making me into the nutter I am today.

Edna was a clean freak. Like, the most anal of all anal. Kind of my opposite.

Now, for your enjoyment and hopefully a better understanding into why I am the way I am, a list of her endearing nutterness:

* Edna pre-ripped her paper towels and folded them in a neat stack on top of the paper towel holder.

* Edna cleaned all water spots from the shower and sink after every use.

* Edna watched The Weather Channel and Fox News exclusively. In the past 3 years since my grandfather died, it’s been The Weather Channel exclusively.

* Edna stored her food in Tupperware INSIDE of those clear plastic fruit & veggie grocery bags tied off with a twist-tie. You know, to keep out the bugs.

* Edna had a special non-toilet toilet brush to use exclusively to get out furniture carpet indentations should any chair need to be moved. Yes, I saw it in action.

* Edna had a special mouse* for kitchen table crumbs and used it.

* Edna sorted her large garage trash can INSIDE the trash can. It was divided into thirds for wet trash, dry trash, & kitchen trash.

* Edna layered her kitchen trash bin by using folded paper towels and folded empty potato chip bags as a “cover” for the rest of the trash.

So, as you can see by my ancestry, I have a reason for my nutterness. I just can’t figure out how the “clean” side of the “anal” didn’t make it down to me.

I’m sure while Edna is up in the heavens watching the great weathermen in the sky, she’ll tsk tsk my cleaning abilities.

And I know her hands will have finally stopped shaking.

omg. My grandma once asked my dad to fix her scissors – she’d broken them on MARSHMALLOWS. How fucking old were those things she wanted to feed us?

They broke the mold on their generation for damn sure.

May she rest in peace. I would love to be a clean freak, but sadly I’m not.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your grandmother sounds like a wonderful woman, and a lot like my own.

(My grandmother’s hands would shake so bad that her handwriting looked like she used a Spirograph… maybe your gran and mine are making heaven a neater place – with curlicues – for us all.)

Please tell me that there is another meaning for “mouse” that does not involve Edna taking a rodent out of box and setting it on top of the kitchen table or counter to clean up crumbs.
