Good Monster In Disguise

I don’t even know why I feel compelled to make a comment about this, but here I am, prattling out a comment.

My friend* Kevin Clash, voice and creator of Elmo, is accused of sexually allegations against a 16-year-old boy. This breaks my heart. *UPDATED BELOW*

I don’t know the man any more than I know any other man who has been between my legs*, so I can’t say for certain if the kid making the accusations was actually 16 at the time of their relationship. Kevin admits to having a relationship with the accuser, but he claims it happened when the accuser was an “adult,” after he turned 18 which was 5 years ago.

I am a little skeeved out at the thought of an 18-year-old doing it with a 47-year-old, but adults are adults. Do what you want, dudes. As for the accusation that the kid was 16 at the time of the relationship, so what? In my very extensive experience as having been a 16-year-old, I have trouble differentiating the thought processes between the 2 measly years’ growth. There’s no difference, except on paper in certain states, between an 16-year-old or an 18-year-old having The Sex with an older person.

Believing that Elmo’s creator is some kind of predator is unfathomable to me. I’ve seen the documentary, Being Elmo, I’ve met him in person, him sitting between my legs.

I’m not so naïve to think that nice people can’t be bad monsters in disguise.

But this guy? I hope all of my instincts are correct and he’s really just a good monster in disguise.

*One lucky day in March, 2010, Claire and I met Elmo and Kevin Clash. Truly one of the highlights of my life.

I love Kevin and Elmo as much as you do and my heart sunk down to my feet.
I didn’t read it so much as a “sexual assault” as much as an inappropriate relationship. I can’t imagine SS without Elmo.

Right, but anything with someone “underage” is usually classified as assault. Ridiculous.

It stinks when great people make huge, ugly, horrible, and crappy choices.

This week seems to have more than it’s share of those things.

I hope it’s not true. If it is, I hope everyone gets the help they need to get through it and to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I hope it’s a mistake as well. However, when my daughter is 16 or even 18 I really don’t think it would be cool if a 47 year old man decides she is a good choice for dating. That is just not cool in my book.
