I’m Bringing Back the Mixtape!

Guns n Roses was my favorite band when I was in 7th grade.

Pearl Jam has been my favorite band since I was in 9th grade.

I knew about Green Day before Dookie came out.

I had mix tapes of Jane’s Addiction with that “dog barking song” that my friends thought was weird.

I blasted Cop Killer by Body Count from my baby blue ’81 Honda Accord’s tape player.

I liked all of those bands and songs before most other people in my high school knew about them. I was a sort of liker-of-bands-that-will-be-famous-one-day.

So when I drive home from dropping off my 5-year-old at preschool, rolling up to my cookie-cutter house in my navy blue ’05 mini van, BLASTING Katy Perry, I almost feel embarrassed for my grunge teenager self.

Firework

What other songs should I add to my embarrassing 30-something mom in-a-minivan mixtape, errr… playlist?

From back in the day: Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch: “Good Vibrations”.
Current: Usher: “Oh My God”
Every mixtape needs a breakup song, too, so either Erykah Badu: “Tyrone” or CeeLo Green: “F*ck You” (neither of which are family friendly, both of which are awesome songs).

Outkast “Hey Ya” and Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow” – It takes all I’ve got to NOT crank that up with a 4 year old in the back.

I vote anything by Eminem. He is my Music husband. Not at all kid friendly so you might want to not play him with the kids in the car. But you can have fantasies about him I won’t mind.

I love that I can say I saw Jane’s Addiction as the live SNL band on show AND that I was at Pearl Jam concert before I did the whole married with children thing. 🙂
I’d be adding some Beastie Boys Brass Monkey all the way!

You need songs you can sing along too. Really loud. I highly recommend Prince’s “How Come U Don’t Call Me”. And Clash “Lost in a Supermarket”. And Replacements “Kiss Me on the Bus”.
Now I want to make a tape!

Dude. I pride myself in knowing about Mumford & Sons before everyone else.

But yeah, Firework? Rocking my socks. And, really, most of Katy Perry. And, uh, I may break into a huge grin when anything by Ke$ha comes on when I am running.

It’s really okay. At least, that’s what I tell myself.

Oh, I can trump you for embarrassing music. Sometimes I listen to “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus when I’m BY MYSELF.

Why is the Lady GaGa left off ALL these lists?!?! Or my beloved Brit-Brit? Womanizer is a must.

I love that this post just gave me a music playlist. I have a girl crush on Pink, so anything by her. My kids are partial to Lady Gaga, and I have to say I really like “Born This Way”. But when I want to remember my years in flannel, I listen to L7.

I’ve been digging that Calle ocho song “One two three four, uno dos tres” thing.. my kick-boxing instructor plays it and I was all ‘OMG, must find it.’

It’s quite a departure for a self-described punk/metal/indie girl.
