It’s A Good Thing Baby Jeesus Made My Kid So Cute

The last thing I want to do today is sound like a whiney, entitled, middle-class American with First World problems.

That said, please pardon my entitled, middle-class American, First World problem whinings today.

This kid is costing us a crapton of money.

It’s a good thing she stayed this cute, because HOT DAMN she’s expensive.

A few weeks ago, I decided she needed to see her pediatrician for a few issues I thought needed to be checked out:

Her pediatrician wrote 3 referrals for 3 specialists to check out her issues.

With our insurance, that’s up to approximately $100andsomething just by making the appointments.

Yes, THANKS BE TO BABY JEESUS WE HAVE INSURANCE.

Because I need my Claire Bear to be healthy.

We haven’t yet gone to the dermatologist – that’s next week. I’m fairly sure I’ll be holding her down screaming while she has a spot removed.

The podiatrist determined that she does indeed have flat feet.

Flat feet aren’t fixable, but she can be fitted with orthodics in her shoes to help her with her ankles and pain in her feet when she walks.

Even with medical insurance, only about 25% of insurance companies will approve paying fully or partially for foot orthodics. We’re still waiting to hear back about our coverage, but if our insurance is like 75% of the others, we’re looking at paying around $500 every 18 months for custom-fit orthodics.

2 weeks ago, Claire and I went in for an overnight sleep study because her pediatrician feared Claire may have sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome (which apparently is a REAL thing?), or abnormally-growing tonsils and/or adenoids.

The kid slept like a champ.

Which, I found out yesterday, in layman’s terms means she has no medically-detectible reasons for not sleeping in her bed all night at home.

Basically, I just had a sleep specialist AND a sleep psychologist diagnose my 5-year-old as being stubborn.

I’m telling myself over and over and over and over… now that we know there’s no medical reason for her sleep issues, we can now move on to behavioral modifications.

We have 2 REALLY GOOD, REALLY WELL-BEHAVED girls. I’m proud that we are complimented on how well-behaved our girls are in public and around friends and family.

I’ve been asked to run a toddler boot camp for training other people’s kids to behave as well as mine. True story.

So basically, we’re paying specialists to tell us to track when Claire goes to sleep, when she wakes up, and how many times she gets up in the middle of the night.

Yes, I’m overjoyed that she has no medical issues preventing her from getting a good night’s sleep. Yes, I’m glad we made the decision to have her sleep quality tested to be assured that when we enforce good sleep behaviors, they are just that – her behaviors. Yes, I’m grateful that we have insurance and are able to eventually pay the doctors who are helping our Claire.

It’s just that HOLY CRAP RAISING THIS CHILD IS COSTING ME A CRUISE AN IPAD AND PROBABLY A HOUSE PAYMENT OR TWO.

It’s a good thing she’s so cute and we love her so much.

For the record, no house payments have been missed. A day or two late every now and then, but never missed.

Also, she’s cheaper than you are! hahahaha. I was kidding. Seriously. I mean I haven’t run the numbers or anything to prove or disprove my claim, but she doesn’t read this so…

Yeah. At least there’s that. And the whole I-love-her-unconditionally thing.

She is really freaking cute. Flat feet, spots and all. Get her into child modeling. She can earn those trips to the specialists.

I’m thinking about enrolling her in some pageants. She needs to start working for her keep.

Anna had tubes in her ears at 10 months, but we had different insurance and paid only $100. I miss that insurance.

It never stops. I’m just sayin’.

But they’re worth every penny.

Especially when they’re cute.

RANT AWAY because expensive they are. I’m glad there’s no medical reason for her sleep issues. It’s good that orthodics will help her feet. But man, even with insurance, these bills HURT.

We took my daughter to the emergency room b/c we feared her appendix was going to burst. Turns out it was really bad gas. Do you know what those doctor bills and xrays and other doctor bills could have bought us? At least she didn’t have to have a surgery. That’s good for lots of reasons.

Believe me, I thank God every day for our super-duper excellent health insurance. And of course, my cute kids! Only bad thing is I have to call about every week to remind them of an outstanding bill. They eventually pay, but hate that I ahve to do that constantly. Amazing the doctors we have to go to just to keep them healthy. I have 3 with varying health problems and see a f$%k-ton of doctors. I’ve been to just about every “-ologist” in the area, so if you ever need a referral, I got ya covered. 🙂
I could, however, use a referral for a dermatologist. Between the birthmark my son has and also some “spots” – that’s our next stop. Yippee! More doctors!

She is really stinking cute. Oh those eyes…!
Do you know how much it chaps my hide to hear people being charged $500 for custom molded orthotics? Because, see, I worked for a podiatrist for 14 years and I know that it takes 5 minutes to make those molds, and I know what it really COSTS to have them made. In fact, I just had a new pair made AT COST by my ex-boss-friend-the-podiatrist. You do NOT want to know the mark up on those babies!!!
