Kindle Of Ill Repute: Sweetness And Un-Smut

by Angie [A Whole Lot of Nothing] on July 10, 2012

in Book Recommendations,Smut Book Club Book Recommendations

It’s been nearly 3 weeks since the last Kindle of Ill Repute update, and friends, you’ll be relieved to know that I’ve not slowed down one eensy teensy bit.

All smut, all the time! Except, I’m sort of lying because I’ve read 2 other non-smut books in between.

Since finishing The Redhead Series and falling madly in love with Alice, I picked up About Last Night by Ruthie Cox, sped through Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye, took a smut break with Defending Jacob by William Landay, suffered through and quit reading Thoughtless, got back into sweet smut with The Sullivans (The Look of Love and From This Moment On) by Bella Andre, and I’m on the finishing touches of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

Gone Girl: A NovelI’m pretty much pissed at the world because I can’t shirk all of my wifely and motherly responsibilities to finish Gone Girl. This book is seriously one of the most twisty-turny-effed-up stories I’ve ever read, watched, or dreamed up. It’s definitely not smut, but what it lacks in warming the nethers it makes up for in WHAT THE FUCK?ness. At press time (like I’m a real publication?), I’m not quite finished, but I’m close enough to tell you to get this book, devour it, and join me in the brainy wonderland of confusion. 5/5

Defending Jacob: A NovelThe other un-smut book, Defending Jacob, was suggested by an un-smut-reading friend, and since it’s at the top of a bunch of bestsellers lists, I figured it’d be good. It was good. If you like a good Who Done It? mixed in with a family thriller mixed in with courtroom drama? This book is for you. It’s incredibly well-written, but considering I’ve been reading un-quality literature like 50 Shades of Grey and smut titled Rock Hard, my literary standards bar may have be lowered to accommodate “average” to be “good.” 3.5/5

About Last Night: A Loveswept Contemporary RomanceAbout Last Night is short, sweet, and features a male protagonist named Neville. Granted he’s British and he goes by Nev, but he has some serious family money, so we can’t really blame him for his unfortunate name now, can we? This banker-cum-artist of course falls for an art historian escaping her old life in America who of course falls right back. No surprises here, but it’s fun and easy to read. And, I totally cried at the end which bumps up my review 1/2 a point. 4/5

Hearts in DarknessAnother short and sweet love-in-the-end story, Hearts in Darkness, is a twist on the typical romantical smut. They actually start their love fest in complete darkness, so the fact that both of the lead characters are drop-dead gorgeous are of little significance. Now, let’s pause for a second or 10 while we oogle over the cover of this book……….4/5

ThoughtlessI started reading Thoughtless after it was suggested by someone who clearly hates me. I don’t even remember who it was, but if it was you, you owe me time and money, friend…if I can still call you that. Reading through the amount of detail and angst squeezed into this books is tantamount to shuffling through waist-high mud. I didn’t like any of the characters, there was way WAY too much non-sex detail, and if I’m already pissed off at the female lead after just 20% of the book, it’s time to put it down. 1/5

The Look of Love: The Sullivans, Book 1 (Contemporary Romance) From This Moment On: The Sullivans, Book 2These first two books in The Sullivans series are sickeningly sweet, and in a very good, sweet-spicy-sexy-porny way. Through both books, I felt heart flutters, even though in the first book, The Look of Love, the Sullivan brother is the epitome of The Perfect Man. Sorry, but no man is THAT perfect. But Bella Andre makes up for The Perfect Man in the second brother’s book, From This Moment On, and created a Near-Perfect Man, complete with a little spanking going on. I have the other Sullivan books on digital hold from the library, and as soon as they’re freed up for me, I’ll be devouring them. 4/5

After I finish Gone Girl (probably while hiding out in the bathroom once I hit ‘publish’ on this post), I have waiting for me White-Hot Christmas by (the very romance author named) Serenity Woods, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith, and my sister-in-smut, Maria, is telling me I need to start on A Neighbor From Hell series. I just hope it’s some cheesy soap opera-y, hate-love series of two $.99 books or I’m making Maria give me my $2 back.

Any other smut suggestions for me, horny smut lovers?

OK, so two of you like the Neighbor from Hell books. They’re all of $.99 apiece, so I have no excuse, right?

Try the Sullivans if you like sweet books. Or try Backstage Pass (with my boyfriend Brian Sinclair) and Rock Me.

Thoughtless made me want to throw my kindle across the room, because of ths selfish stupid, horrid, ect ect ect female. I could have cared less about any of the characters. I am proud to say I didn’t finish it and since I have reading OCD this was an accomplishment for me. I decided they all died in a freak avalanche. The End. Yes I know the setting of the book, but in my kindle world FREAK AVALANCHE works for me.

The freak avalanche landed on their heads for me around 20% of the way into the book.

Are you on Goodreads? Because you’re my new best friend. I LOVED Hearts in Darkness. I read it in one evening. Maybe I’ll read The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty next. Either that or I, Robot.

Ok, I have read the Claiming of Sleeping Beauty and I can tell you right now DON’T DO IT. It was so incredibly hard core (really Anne Rice?) that I would skip giant sections just to get through it. The only reason I finished the darn thing was because I paid good money for it on my kindle. Awful.

Just finished Gone Girl as a palette cleanser myself – very twisty turny terrible people book. Reading the follow-up to Discovery of Witches, Shadows of the Night right now but I’ll be back on the smut train asap.

So Discovery of Witches and Shadows of the Night aren’t smutty? Good to know.
