Pinterest Success Stories And Tips For Increasing Blog Traffic From Pinterest

by Angie [A Whole Lot of Nothing] on February 6, 2012

in How To Use The Internet,The Internets

Even though I may have a tinge of jealousy, I like hearing about success stories.

Success stories, from my friends especially, give me a goal. It seems like every day, I hear of something new a friend has accomplished. From a new writing job for a major entertainment company to hearing that a friend’s blog has gone viral, I love knowing that good things happen to good people.

Pinterest is quickly becoming one of those success story-makers. With a 70% traffic increase in just the first 3 weeks of January (from 10 million to 17 million hits), Pinterest is helping make websites and posts go viral.

I asked a few of those friends who’ve had successful pins to share their tips on how to to help your blog posts get more traffic through Pinterest.

Pinterest Success Stories

Curvy Girl Guide | @curvygirltweets | on Pinterest
As the Social Media Editor for Curvy Girl Guide, I started the contributor-driven Curvy Girl boards just when Pinterest started to take off. It’s taken off very successfully for us, making Pinterest the #5 traffic source (notably ahead of Twitter) for our online magazine. In an article by Ad Age, Lands’ End credited Curvy Girl Guide as the catalyst for starting their own Pinterest account on which to pin their products:

Land’s End first learned about Pinterest from a blog community — Curvy Girls Guide. “They introduced us to Pinterest and at once we realized, it’s kind of an immediate attraction, visually stimulating and inspiring and we wanted to see how we can make it work for Lands’ End, specifically for Canvas,” said Michele Casper, PR director for the company.

Casey Mullins | @mooshinindy | on Pinterest
Recently, a post Casey published on Babble garnered nearly 200,000 hits in a matter of a few days from Pinterest. The pin below of a photo Casey took of our friend Emily’s baby on a bookshelf went crazypants on Pinterest (asshat commenters not withstanding, or maybe as a result of?). As of the publishing of this post, the pin has over 500 likes and over 1800 re-pins. That can mean a major traffic boost for Casey’s post from which the photo was pinned.

Katy Carter | @ katyshecooks | on Pinterest
Katy calls herself a “small” blogger, but whatever that means for her now, will not be the same in the next few months if she keeps pinning the food posts she publishes. Food and recipe posts are on par with arts & crafts pins; you can’t find enough of them around Pinterest and everyone loves them. Even though she just started pinning, she finding “already, I’m seeing very steady residual traffic.”

Heather Spohr | @mamaspohr | on Pinterest
Heather is already a popular blogger, but with the increase in traffic to her blog that she’s seeing from Pinterest, she’s growing even more successful. Heather says she’s “received 142K hits from pinterest in the last 30 days” as a result of she and others pinning her posts. The pin below has received a combined nearly 2000 re-pins and 400+ likes from all of the times it’s been pinned.

April | @mommynamedapril | on Pinterest
April has been publishing her recipes and food photography on her blog for several years, but with the rise of Pinterest, she’s seen a massive increase in web traffic to her food blog. In January alone, she received over 450,000 hits from Pinterest alone, up from 100,000 in December. As you can see from her blog’s source page on Pinterest, April’s high-quality food photography is working to her advantage with the number of pins and re-pins from her blog.

Tips For Increasing Your Pinterest Traffic

  • Always put an image with your posts. ALWAYS. I have lots of posts that are pinned onto “Good reads” or “Favorite blogs” boards. Those are the ones that give me the traffic. [from Heather]
  • Pin your viral-worthy posts on Sunday afternoons. [from April]
  • Give your pins a short, catchy title that if you read it, you would want to click to read more.
  • Watermark images with your name or web address that you think will be re-pinned.
  • Pin your own blog posts. There is no algorithm (like with Stumbleupon) that “punishes” you for pinning your own blog.
  • Categorize your boards properly.
  • Link your Pinterest account with your Facebook account. “Likes” on Pinterest will show on your Facebook timeline.
  • Don’t limit your pinning to your own posts. Pinterest is social, be social with others on Pinterest.
  • Go back and pin relevant posts from past months and years. Pinterest is relatively new, so older posts may not have been “discovered” yet on Pinterest.
  • Pin from a blog post NOT from a home page. The link associated with your pin needs to go back to your post, not your main home page (unless you’re pinning to share an entire blog or website).

This is a great post. I definitely need to learn to get my blog out there more. I can’t believe some of those people have 142k views a month! I’m averaging like, 20-30 views a month, and still waiting on my first follower haha.

I certainly need to use images more though, that’s a great tip.

I have to admit, I didn’t consider Pinterest as a way to share blog posts I liked as a sort of bookmarking tool until the last few weeks. I started seeing traffic for non-photo-centered posts and realized Pinterest was more than just recipes and photo sharing.

I don’t get a lot of hits directly from Pinterest because I haven’t had that many things pinned…. BUT I do get a lot of Google search hits on posts where I’ve written about Pinterest or something I’ve made from there, etc. I’m definitely going to remember that in the future.

Start pinning your posts and other’s posts that you don’t particularly think are “pin-worthy,” but if they have a good title or good quip, they’ll do well.

I have clicked over to a lot of blogs (including this post) from Pinterest. I can definitely see how Pinterest would increase hits, however due to the nature of my blog I’m not sure I see it being successful for me. I don’t blog about food or arts and crafts or anything, so I’m not sure people on Pinterest would care to be honest… maybe I’m wrong!? (Tell me I’m wrong! :P )

Well there’s my fricken lightbulb turning on! I’ve always sort of shied away from pinning my own stuff (why would I wait for someone else to though, when the two people that read me don’t pin!)
I always find myself commenting on blogs without pics, since they need to add them so I can pin it. And I totally only want to use it as my bookmarking site *g*
Oh and for cheap bastards like me on wordpress.com, this person has figured out how to add a pin it button to posts – http://betweenheandshe.com/2012/01/10/how-to-add-the-pin-it-button-for-wordpress-com-blogs/

In that case, my question would become how are they doing that? How do you track the total aggregate pins/likes once something branches out and gets re-pinned from an original pin. Seems that counting each hit on the source would be a bit tedious.

I don’t know of a way to track all of the pins/likes once they’ve been pinned/re-pinned/shared, but you can check your blog stats for incoming links. The stats I had quoted were for the single pin I found with the largest numbers.

Here is my Pinterest success story: I made a onesie for a friend’s baby, almost 2 years ago. I put a picture of it up on my flickr page. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurahartrich/4661383223/) I check my flickr stats fairly regularly, and was shocked to see the views for this particular picture skyrocket around August of last year. I was getting hundreds of views every day on this onesie, all coming from Pinterest. I wasn’t a member yet. I had a vague idea of what it was. I thought, if so many people like this onesie enough to pin it, maybe they would also like it enough to buy it. It took me several weeks to get my act together (I’m a busy SAHM to two young boys), but I finally got an Etsy shop set up and offered the onesie, or a variation of it, for sale. Then I put a link to my etsy shop on my flickr photo page, so if people are patient enough to click through twice, they will find my etsy shop, The Onesie (http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheOnesie?ref=si_shop). I wish I had been ready to set up shop quicker once I saw the views on that photo going up, because I totally missed an opportunity for sales during that first initial surge. Still, I did the best I could under the circumstances, and I have done pretty well, even though my views on that pin have dropped significantly since the initial cycle of re-pins. I’m at 350+ sales in my Etsy shop, since September, and sales continue to be pretty steady. It has been a great experience overall…. I have started to think of myself as a small business woman in addition to a stay at home mom. I had to teach myself to screen print because I couldn’t keep up with orders when I was painting every onesie by hand, which is how I started out. One negative thing is that since my onesie is so ubiquitous on Pinterest, there are a lot of other people now selling the phrase that I originated. Kind of hard to swallow. When I find other people selling onesies with my phrase, I politely ask them to stop. Most cooperate. Others don’t. It has been a crazy ride for me. My house is a lot messier than it used to be, and I’m on a first name basis with all the clerks at my local post office. :) I’ve never been busier in my life, but I wouldn’t trade it. Thank you, Pinterest and Pinners!

This is a really useful article and I’m certainly going to share this post with other friends in Africa who I am trying to encourage to use Pinterest.
