Pretend conversations about getting stuff from the internet, BlogHer10 Edition

“Why don’t I get the JIG* when everyone else is getting JIGs from the JIG company?”*

I’m asked this question every day no I’m not, and every time I say the same thing: JUST ASK.

No, I’m not a big-time blogger. I’m not a big deal on the internet. I don’t have a huge following on the Twitter.

But, I am consistent in what I produce. I am good at what I do. “But what DO you DO?” they ask no they don’t.

Well, Imaginary Friend, I spend copious amounts of my precious time on the intertubes running an online business, blogging, and blogging, and blogging, and writing, and lighting fires no I don’t on the Twitter.

OK, but really, I pay attention. I see what brands and companies work with bloggers and social media mavens. (Bee tee dub, can we please extricate anyone who calls themselves a “maven”?)

I post my email address on my blog so it’s easy for the JIG PR peoples to find. If I didn’t want people to contact me, I wouldn’t have it available.

I am good people to my friends. When my friends are approached by PR reps or companies, and they ask my friends, “Do you have other blogger friends who would be interested in working with us?” my friends tell them about me BECAUSE I’M NOT A DOUCHEBAG.

The most effective way I’ve found for working with companies, getting sponsored, and receiving JIGs to try out and review? I ASK. Plain and simple. I pitch them. No, it’s not an extended history of who and I am and what I do and how I’m tremendously awesome. It’s a simple 3-4 sentence email sent directly to the marketing and/or PR department of a company. For every 5 emails I send out, I get probably 1 back saying they’re interested. It’s not hard work.

So when I see people on the Twitter and on blogs writing about how they don’t receive JIGs or money, I wonder, how do they think the people who DID get the JIGs get the JIGs? Do you think the JIG and money fairy blessed them with a UPS package at their front door? Was it a super secret meeting of the top-tier bloggers?

No. They asked. They worked. They played nice.

*I made up a “JIG” for a generic term for any product and/or company. It’s super creative, so don’t even think of stealing my idea for a JIG.

Amen! It’s also worth mentioning that there are people who DON’T get the JIG specifically because they ARE douchebags. Don’t bitch and moan and be a snarky assface to PR people all the time and then expect them to reach out to you when they have something to offer.

YES. Very much yes.

I like this post.

I also like the idea of adults realizing that sometimes other people get opportunities that they don’t get AND THAT’S OKAY.

Oh my God, look, the sun is still shining like it does every day….

I am SO sick of people calling themselves Social Media Mavens.
Also? If I learned anything from working for a HP for so long and doing event mgmt is that it never hurts to ask.

Graham always says, you won’t know unless you ask…and he’s right. I should follow that advice more often. It can be scary to risk rejection, and I think that’s why a lot of bloggers don’t.

I have a serious case of the giggles. I regularly get email asking if I’d like to do a giveaway on my blog, the one 20 people read. And they only read it because there is a post explaining the difference between single cream and double cream. I always assume those emails are spam. Maybe I should pay more attention.

Thanks Ang – this helps.

I especially liked the part where you channeled your inner Richard Nixon with the “I am not a douchbag” comment (with all caps to eliminate any doubt of whether you are a douchebag or not).

Amen sister! I only ask companies I truly think are great (products, service, whatever) and I say no a lot (mostly cuz so many pitches are for moms with young babies). You’re right – there’s no harm in asking!

I have not checked into your wbieste for a week or so, I am truly amazed at all the work you all put into it, in so little time. I especially like the hammock. Keep it around for my next visit. Please. The kitchen looks fantastic, what an amazing transformation. It won’t be long before you are moved in and the two of you can sit outside with your morning coffee, and just appreciate the nature that sourrounds you. Love the fence, and I know your three little boys will love it. Great job you two, can’t wait to visit soon.LoveMOM
