The critics should be criticized and maybe kicked in the ass

by Angie [A Whole Lot of Nothing] on June 29, 2009

in WTF?

I’ve been blogging for almost 2 years.

That makes me an expert in nothing. (see: blog title)

For me, blogging has lead me to valuable friendships, getting free stuff, and a way to see the world beyond my cookie-cutter street.

I used to read every single post in my feed reader, but that got to be too much pressure to keep up for me. Now, it sits idle and ignored, much like my bank account. I’m afraid to look in the dark room.

There are times that I’ll check out my friend’s posts or posts linked to from Twitter, and recently, I’ve been reading more and more about what blogging is and who is a blogger and why people should blog. I have a feeling the upcoming BlogHer conference is to blame.

woo hoo! only (checking calendar) 3-1/2 weeks till rub-up-athon!

Reading these other blogs (mostly written by people I don’t normally read) makes me wonder why they have such authority to declare who is a blogger, who should call themselves a blogger, and why we should all care what being a blogger means.

Who the FUCK cares?

Really.

Isn’t there room out here in the Internets World for every man, woman, and child to have their own little slice of Blog Heaven? Can’t some mommy bloggers write solely about their experiences as a mother, no matter how inane or exaggerated? Can’t some people carve out of their blog house a place to vent or rant or post crap-ass pictures of their dog and call it their own?

Why does everyone have to be criticized and called out for doing what they like?

If someone wants to call themselves a “Social Media Guru” or the “Queen of All Things Awesome” or “Worst Mother on Earth,” why not let them?

If you don’t like it, don’t read it. By reading it and giving them attention, you are validating their successes. SOMEone, somewhere is reading them, so there IS a space in the Series of Tubes for them.

I’ve said my peace, now run along and make yourself happy. And quit worrying about what everyone else is doing.

Unless they’re making brownies – then sit down and enjoy.

When I was (GASP!) away from Twitter this evening making dinner (insane, I know) I got mildly riled up about this in my head.

You’re absolutely right.

Whhhaaaaatttt the fuckkkkkkkkkkk. (That’s me bellowing.)

It’s all so silly. Really. Enormously silly.

I heart you.

THOUGH to be fair I am still over the entire idea of social media mavens. Cause doesn’t that just mean being good at Twitter? I dunno. I CAN TWEET ANYONE’S BALLS OFF.

I’m with you….everyone with a damned Twitter account thinks they are a Social Media Guru or a “marketing expert”. Like Angie says, I just block their asses and ignore them!

You have a point. A good one. I just get tired of sitting down to read “blogs” about people who I’m hoping are going to be funny or engaging or inspiring or something – anything (kids, dogs, music, hamsters, photography whatever) as long as it’s interesting … and it just turns out they are trying to sell me something. I’m tired of being “sold” that’s all.

And yes Lesley Maria’s new tag line must be: I can tweet anyone’s balls off! LOL

I liked this.

I had a convo with a friend awhile back and she asked me why I twittered with people if they didn’t read my blog (because she only uses social media to meet new bloggers/blog readers, etc) and I was like, “I don’t know, I just do. Because who cares if they read my blog? It’s not all about what I write, it’s more that we’re friends. They don’t have to read me to be my friend..And besides, my blog isn’t always funsauce for people to read so I don’t expect people to read it..”

She thought I was strange for saying that.

I thought it was normal? *shrugs*

EIther way, I liked your post. I’ve been checking out some new people, mostly because I will only know a handfull of people at BlogHer & I’d like to be able to match some faces with names, and because I like to meet new people. But I read to read. Not to judge, not to raise an eyebrow, I just read.

Damn this was a long ass comment. My bad ;)

I am not a Social Media Expert because I hate Twitter (because I don’t “get” it, and that’s just me), don’t do facebook or myspace or any of those things. i just like to write. And it’s good to have other people read it because it kind of validates some of the things about which I write, but I would still write if NO ONE read-because it’s mine. The only thing I hate is being called a Mommy blogger-and only because of the negative connotations with that; I am so much more than “just” a mommy blogger! but I get what you are saying, and I just (gasp!) don’t read the blogs that don’t interest me. That’s it. There are LOTS of others.

I am perfectly happy with just blogging – twitter and facebook are such time soaks, it’s hard for me to do anything more than what I do on my blog and yet twitter and facebook keep jumping up in my face saying “Do ME, Big Boy!” No. I will not. I could – but I will not allow myself to get sucked into that time trap. and as for the critics – hmmmm … let me see … if they really, really want to – I have some sweat on my balls they can lick. Oooo. Now THERE’S a time soak for ya.

See, the weird thing is you can only know what people are saying about bloggers if you go read them . . . I happen to like being ignorant and dancing to my own tune on my own little piece of internet. Rock on, I say! Whose to tell you you can’t rock like you want to on your own blog? :)

I am new to twitter and the blog world. Hard to believe, and YES I have been living under a rock thanks! I have been so confused by all this blog bickering. I thought the whole point was to have your own space to do what you want…so f-off if you don’t like it. Hee hee.
I loved everything you said, and could not have said it better myself.
