What the Frick?

in Friends,WTF?

Two of my very good friends have 2yo boys a few weeks apart from one another. They’re both in the same day care class while their moms, both teachers at the same school, go to work.

Why am I sharing this info?

Becuase these 2 YEAR OLDS have HOMEWORK!

Yes, I said homework. For 2 year olds. In day care.

What was the homework for the 2 year olds in day care? Writing letters.

Exsqueese me? 2 year olds writing letters?

As a mom of two toddlers (3 & 1) with Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, I’d like to know what is this world coming to?

That’s freaking insane! My 2 year old could draw a lovely squiggly picture, but not letters. That day care is nuts!

When my children were two, they could write a five paragraph essay.
NOT!!! That’s just insane.

At Parent Orientation for my daughters’ kindergarten class, the teacher said (and I quote), “Kindergarten is the new First grade.” I kid you not! Is that like “pink is the new black” nonsense we heard a few seasons ago?

When they were two, they were speaking in full, articulate, mostly grammatically correct sentences, but writing letters, I think not! Scribbles, big loopy scribbles, sharp angular scribbles, yes. Letters? Not even close! On the other hand, my son, their womb-mate, (yes, they are triplets) didn’t speak at all until he was nearly 32 months old! Part of the reason was a developmental speech delay, but part of it was HIS SISTERS SPOKE FOR HIM!

I had to laugh when I saw this. I work as a consultant in early childhood programs for children with special needs and challenging behaviors. Most of the kids that I work with are currently in the middle of working on their thesis. (of course I’m kidding) The only thing that I can hope from hearing this is that the intention is to have a family activity.

You’ve got to be kidding me?! My son is going on 6 and just now learning how to write his letters. Let them be kids. Statistics show that a 4 year old that can read or write does not mean they will be smarter than the other kids who couldn’t at 3 when they are in 2nd grade. So what’s the point?

I’d be kicked out right along with Cecily. Homework for toddlers. Crazy.

Is that even a reasonable expectation of 2 year olds??? That just sounds CRAZY!

What? Whats the problem here? My two year old can write her alphabet in English and Chinese. She can also speak French, Latin, and Spanish. I don’t see what the big deal is?

Oh, I’m lying. My two year old is kinda dumb. Like all two year olds.

My 6 month old son is in daycare and he is supposed to have homework, but we never do it. I don’t even look to see what it is because I think it is ridiculous. No matter how simple it might be I think it is crazy they even suggest such a thing…

That just seems wrong on so many levels! Right now I’m so glad I’m staying home with the kids and bypassing the daycare route! :)
