Writing my life away

by Angie [A Whole Lot of Nothing] on May 24, 2010

in Blogging

I’ve never thought of my breaks in posting as writer’s block, because I don’t consider my brain seepage as “writing.”

It’s really just edited brain dumpage.

Listening to Howard Stern this morning, as I do every morning, Jewel was on talking about her writing process. Basically, she doesn’t edit. She doesn’t think. She doesn’t worry about the future of the words.

She doesn’t believe in writer’s block.

“Writer’s block is for people who edit themselves.”

Apparently, I need to quit editing what I write. As in, just let it out onto the paper/screen. Don’t worry about the process or the subject or who will read it.

Just let it out.

that’s what she said

Like some dumb bunny on a reality dating show, I need to not worry what other people think of me and let the stupid fly.

Maybe I should go on a reality show just to learn how to release my inhibitions.

Is there a show out there looking for an overweight, 30-something, married mother of 2? Other than Wife Swap. And The Biggest Loser. Or, wait. Maybe TBL would take me. I could totally lose weight and be humiliated all at the same time. bygones

Not that I’m asking for it, but if more exciting things happened in my life (ex. winning the Lotto, going on Oprah), I’d have more exciting things to blog about. But then I’d also have to be a good story-teller, which, I am not. I’m like the worst joke/story-teller ever. (see: this blog)

Why do you even stick around here and come back? I love love that you do, but why?

I totally need a class in how to write good. Or better. Or more interestinger.

WOW that was just…ENLIGHTENING.

It’s *possible* that Miss Jewel meant to do the editing AFTER you brain dumped. Just a thought. 😉

“Or more interestinger”

Awesome.

And that, in 3 words, is why I come back. 😛

I heard her say that on Howard too, and I though that was damn good advice. Lately I have noticed I edit a bit too much, and I even wrote a post ahead of time on more than one occasion. I write better when I just sit down and let it spew out of my fingers.

From now on, I’m going to just write, publish and go with it. That’s what blogging is about, isn’t it ?

PS – I love that you love Howard too !!! Should we hang out near the Sirius studios at BH10 and see if we can stalk him? ; )

All I’m gonna say about Jewel is that if you read her book of “poetry” (air quotes totally intended), you might notice that she perhaps could use a little dose of writer’s block.

I come back here because you use words like “interestinger.” That’s good enough for me.

Oh my GOD you just described me to a tee!! We should totally be friends IRL. But you live in Fl and I live in NY. It may not work out. But we could have a long distance relationship, like maybe you can write stories and post them to a website and I can come and read them. yeah… that’ll work. Awesome-ness!!

It does sound like good advice. To a point. A little editing is good. Even if it’s just by using a thesaurus to make it more interestinger ( If that word is not in there, it should be). Or names to protect the innocent ( or guilty?).

Your blog is about you and your life. Right? Tell your story. No one said you had to publish it all.

Writing without a filter is one thing, posting without one is another. I write without editing and I had posted all of it. When I looked back at what I had posted, I hated it. I ended up deleting several years worth of posts.

I only edit myself now on subject matter that I actually post. Writing get stuff out of my system. Not all of that is something I want the world to know. At least for the time being.

I love your blog, Angie! Sometimes I feel the same way that (I think) you do: like may be I should be writing about world hunger or Aids or something “important”. But there’s a place out there for bloggers who write about regular people living day-to-day. Stories that are sometimes silly, sometimes serious but that always bring a smile to someone’s face. And you have a gift for it!

Just write for yourself, sister! As my mother always told me “What other people think of you is none of your business”. But if it helps…I think your blog is awesome!

Hi! *waving*

I don’t quite remember how I stumbled across your blog but I will tell you that I can’t get enough of it! Sometimes, it sounds like I’m reading about myself. And if you can’t laugh at yourself…then you wont get out of this world alive, am I right? Right. 🙂
This is YOUR blog. Write about whatever you want to write about. It’s your life. Live it. Then if you want, write about it.
Do I have a blog? No. Will I one day? Maybe. And that’s also because of the fact that I don’t feel like I much to write about…but sometimes I feel like I do. What does it matter if it’s boring to everyone else? If they don’t like…then they don’t have to read it. Right?

By the way, I always laugh my ass off on the stuff you post on aiming low. Yes, I followed you there as well. No, I’m not a crazy stalker. I promise.

I come back because you’re YOU. But. If you’re interested in writing better, why not try a little fiction, now and again. There are ALL SORTS of writing challenges out there – two of which I am associated with – the 100 Word Challenge – and ‘The Inferno’ – a site where writers are able to create their stuff (prose, poetry, free verse) in response to a challenge word or phrase. If you’re interested, let me know. I’d be more than happy to help you get involved.

I love your blog. And therefore your brain dumping.

I don’t edit my blog. Which makes it a freaking train wreck. (And a grammar catastrophy.) I tend to use it as an extension to my therapy.

Though I have a feeling your brain dumping would be hilarious.
