You’re My Only Hope

in Farts and Other Stuff

I’ve learned that in order to be a good writer and a good blogger, I need to be authentic. Authentic in what I write about myself and my feelings and my shiz.

In thinking about what to write this post, I racked my wee brain searching for a story to re-tell, a feeling I had today, a sex dream about Edward, or a funny story that happened to me.

And I came up with nothing.

I have a few theories on this nothingness:

1. I’m boring.
Nah. Just way too normal.

2. I’m boring and my family is boring.
They’re not boring – I just forget all of the details of what happens on our trips to SeaWorld and Target. (see: #3)

3. I’ve come to the end of my storytelling.
Not that my storytelling ever began. In my old age of 32, I’m learning I’m not a good story-teller, which makes for a bad joke-teller. I’m more of a one-liner kinda girl. One-liners don’t make for good blog posts.

4. I don’t want to be authentic.
In order to bare my soul and share my inner thoughts, I’d leave myself vulnerable. That’s really not me. Open. Exposed. Yeah… not me. No one wants to see me exposed. You may be blinded.

So, this leaves me at a crossroads in Blogville.Princess Leia
Do I continue to write about silliness (see: Jorts)?
Do I just post pictures of my girls and their cuteness?
Do I just vlog?

I’m not quitting blogging at all. I love my bloggy friends and the connections I’ve made. But like Britney Spears, I’m at a crossroads.

Help me dear blog friends. You’re my only hope.

Go through your life like a Karate Kid. That’s how BritBrit does it, I think you can do it, too.

I’m boring, too. We can be boring together.

Maybe we should write a story together. I write three sentences and then send people to your blog to read your three sentences and you send people to my blog to read my three sentences. Kinda like a warped version of MadLibs.

Or is that ideas as ridiculous as it really reads? LOL

This is going to sound so amazingly stupid but I say just write. Write about whatever comes into your head and don’t worry about how stupid it might sound or what someone might think. Easier said than done, right? I’ve been there and I know what you’re going through. I think everyone goes through this at some point in time. Chin up. Be true to yourself and write what you know even if that’s silliness.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with boring, boring can be wonderful! But do what feels right . . . and then it’ll be authentic, whatever that may be.

I hope you stick around though. :)

Don’t just do anything. Do all of those things. Variety makes for a better blog.

One liners make great blog posts. If that’s what you’ve got – then that’s what you give. If you feel a rant coming on, we’ll take that, too. If you want to tell stories about your girls, (your babies – not the OTHER ones – although they may have interesting stories from time to time, too. I’m just sayin’) then that’s just fine.

But it really comes down to why you blog.

You are bright and intelligent and you write well. Hockeyman is a lucky fellow. Just blog on, darlin’. Blog on.

I’m so right there with you. To the point where the BlogHer Ads Internet Police have yelled at me because I’m not posting enough. Sigh.

I think it’s just the time of year. Family just becomes more important than the computer.

So you’re saying we don’t get to hear the Edward sex dreams?

I’ve only been reading you for a short time, but yours is one of the first blogs I read each day. I completely understand the struggle to ‘find yourself’ as a blogger. So be yourself, I think you’re awesome.

My advice?

Write what means something to YOU – when something means something to YOU – and don’t worry about how interesting it is to anyone else.

I wish I had advice for you… I feel the same way a lot of times and it would be so easy to just, NOT do anything sometimes…

I’ve got a whole post that I want to write on storytelling…I thought of it after another friend of mine made a post similar to this. I think that we all have the same kinds of lives; some of us just see it in story form.

You are never boring though, so shush…no more words. ;)

The one good thing about being boring is that you belong to a group of people that comprise the vast majority.

Most people are boring. They just fake like they are not.

The woman who is writing an entire month’s worth of posts on the crap we’re doing for the holidays obviously has no idea. If you find the solution, share it, wouldja?

Freaky. I am at EXACTLY the same crossroad as you. In fact, I am NOW having that conversation with my husband as to why I blog my heart out and get so few comments. I get hits. Lots of hits, but comments? Barely.

If anyone can tell me what’s wrong with me I’d appreciate that, too.

Now for you: your blog’s look first pulled me in. Your photo shows your pretty face, and you have an intelligent and sweet expression on your face. Your writing is funny and engaging, and I love your photos. The boob thing was HILARIOUS. There’s nothing wrong with what you post at all.

I think people like blogs that are honest, open and also aren’t afraid to post everyday, family photos. I’m holding off posting photos of my children, save from their really early childhood years. Now they’re 11, 13 and 15, so I figure baby and young child photos are okay to post. But have you noticed how many bloggers regularly post pictures of their kids? I’m a little afraid to.

I like hearing about everyday, funny life stories, but I also like hearing about funny memories, or poignant. Posts about existential angst, especially if they have a bit of snark. Snark in general is good.

From what I’ve read of your blog I wouldn’t change a thing. But I understand your dilemma as I’m in the EXACT same one. I feel like I try so hard, but though my hits are high my comments are low. And I don’t get it. If anyone can tell me why, feel free! I’m willing to change.

But happy holidays, in case I don’t “talk” to you again before.
